Copyediting

You have spent time and effort getting your draft content right and in all likelihood have had at least one other person cast their eye over it. Once you have had this initial feedback it is time for a copyedit.

Focus is on the detail of the text: agreeing final content, making sure it reads well for its intended audience and has clarity of purpose. Copyediting also involves applying consistency to the formatting, structure and tone – this may include ensuring the use of inclusive language.

 

I will alert you to content that may require permission to use and I will flag up any potential legal issues. References and citations can be checked to ensure they conform to your chosen style. I will also query obvious factual inaccuracies.

Proofreading

If you proofread your own work your brain can trick you into reading what you thought you wrote rather than spotting any errors!

 

This is the final detailed review of your document and assumes that any editing or reviewing of the content is now complete and all those final changes have been incorporated.

As well as checking for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation, I will run a number of checks to ensure consistency in respect of things like spacing, parentheses and single or double quotes. I may at this stage make suggestions for minor changes to help the flow of the document.

As proofreading should only take place once the content is finalised, I will also make sure the layout of your document or text is correct. Are headings clear and consistent? Are the page numbers correct? Do links work? Are items like the index, tables and illustrations correctly placed and referenced and formatted consistently?

Plain English

The Plain English service is a more comprehensive writing service, designed to rewrite text to make it more readable for your audience or so that it better aligns to your corporate or personal style.

 

This could be documentation that has been translated or that requires updating for a new audience. It could even be something formal that you need to write, but which you don't quite feel hits the mark. 

​

I also have considerable experience in reviewing CVs to help you stand out amongst the competition.

I can rewrite text with your target readers in mind to ensure it:

  • is easy to understand without altering the meaning;

  • gets your point across, removing ambiguity and jargon;

  • is a suitable and effective form of communication for the intended audience.
